Sister Cities International (SCI) Annual Conference 2002
July 17 to 20, 2002, in Toledo, Ohio
The SCI Annual Conference was held in Toledo, Ohio, July 17 to 20, 2002. The theme was "Sister Cities United for International Peace and Friendship." The workshops focused on four major tracks: Capacity Building, Economic Development and Poverty Alleviation, SCI Peace Initiatives and Toledo Community Models. SCI and Toledo Sister Cities International (TSCI) thank you for a successful conference!

2002 Annual Conference Speeches
Interim SCI Board President Nancy Huppert offered opening remarks.
Keynote speakers Kent Hill, Assistant Administrator for Europe and Eurasia at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and Rick Ruth, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), each delivered heartfelt speeches praising the efforts of SCI's grassroots volunteers, while urging a continued commitment to promoting peace and understanding. Listening to the Membership -- Identifying New Opportunities for Peace & Friendship Initiatives
Reta Brudd, state coordinator for Northern Illinois, facilitated this session, which gave members a forum to discuss ways to improve the national headquarters and the network as a whole. Topics included the Annual Conference, the SCI Board of Directors and the national office.
Wheelchairs for Peace
Presenters included: Jerry Gary, Program Director, Wheelchairs for Peace, Sister Cities International; Chris Lewis, Director-Development, Wheelchair Foundation; and Randy Avon, 3rd Vice President, SCI Board of Directors. Summary: This session provided details about the Wheelchairs for Peace program and premiered the new Wheelchairs for Peace video, which was also shown at the Lou Wozar Annual Awards Luncheon.
